Fairy Tales in a Hurry - Snow White
Once upon a time, there was, of course, a king and a queen. And they were expecting a child.
One snowy day, while the queen was sewing, she pricked her finger and spilled a drop of blood onto the snow. Looking at this, and her sewing work, she said "Oh, if only I could have a child who was as black as ebony, as white as snow, and as red as blood." Because that totally doesn't sound like a vampire...
The baby is born soon enough, and, because this is the middle ages, the mother died in childbirth. The baby was a girl, with skin as white as snow, lips as red as blood, and hair black as ebony. And the king named her Snow White.
Years pass, and the king takes a second wife, an incredibly vain woman who somehow got her hands on a magic mirror that could answer any question. Being an idiot, the Evil Queen only ever asks it one thing: "Who is the fairest in the land?" And every day, the mirror would answer that it was her.
After the king dies, the Evil Queen starts working Snow White like a s

Monster Lesson #5
Being surrounded by water, Japan naturally has many aquatic monsters in their folklore, including today's subject, the Kappa.
"Kappa" (河童) comes from the words "kawa" (river) and "wappa" (child). The creature has around 80 other names, spanning every region of the country. There are many variations of the myth, but they all tend to boil down to the same grab-bag of traits.
Kappa are small, turtle-like humanoids that live in rivers and have dish-like indents on top of their heads, and are extremely mischievous. Their pranks vary widely, ranging from spooking livestock and looking up women's kimonos, to kidnapping/drowning children and animals, assaulting women, and even eating human flesh.
One story says that, if you're not careful while bathing, a kappa will sneak up behind you and suck out your soul through your anus! That's Japan for you.
Like all monsters, kappa have weaknesses too. It's said that, if you want to ward off kappa attacks, you can write your name on a cuc

Monster Lesson #4
Every country in the world has their own version of the vampire legend, and some are weirder than others. For example, the Philippines has the Aswang.
By day a normal woman, at night the Aswang sprouts wings and flies in search of her favorite food: babies. She uses her incredibly long, sharp tongue to reach into people's homes and snatch up their children. In some stories, she tears fetuses out of their mothers to eat. That's just plain gross.
The Aswang is sometimes called a "Tik-tik", because of the noise it makes. Its said that, the closer it gets to you, the quieter the noise is.
There are several legends about women marrying handsome men and moving into their elaborate mansions, only to find out that their new mother-in-law is a bloodthirsty Aswang. (Insert evil in-law joke here.)
Strangely, the Aswang are more human than most monsters. They have families and friends, during the day at least, and will not harm people who live in their town. Because of this, the Philippines have a

TWO WEEKS AFTER EXPERIMENT
She pulled me through the woods, with me barely able to keep up. I vocally objected several times along the way, but whenever I did she got mad at me and said…something (eventually I realized that I might be attracting predators, so I immediately went as silent as a mouse). There were several times where she stopped and looked around—almost like a dog detecting a squirrel—and pulled me into a bush. Each time I got nervous, not knowing and unable to ask what exactly it was we were hiding from, not knowing and unable to ask what I was supposed to do, doing my best to remain silent and unmoving, not knowing and unable to ask if I was doing anything wrong.
But each time we came out fine, and eventually she led me to a large clearing full of tents and huts. There were lots of other people there, also in leather tunics, although unlike the girl most had intricate designs and patterns on theirs (some even had what could be called

TWO WEEKS AFTER EXPERIMENT
The girl looked to be around her early teens (it was doubtful the concept of “teenager” would be invented for several millennia, though), with black hair, brown eyes, and dark skin. One peculiar thing I noticed was her facepaint; she had three vertical purple lines on the left side of her face going from the top of her forehead to her chin.
We just stood there looking at each other like that, for what felt like minutes. She then exclaimed some confused gobellygook at me in what was presumably the native tongue. I had no idea what she said, but I could tell from her tone that the sentence(s) would end in a combined question mark and exclamation point. I had no idea what to do, but I doubt she had any more clue than I did. So eventually I just stood up, reached out to offer a handshake, and said “Um… Hello there? So what’s your name?”
I didn’t think for a second that she would understand any of

TWO WEEKS AFTER EXPERIMENT
I can hardly believe what happened today. I was walking through the forest, when I noticed an odd smell. After following it, I came across a pile of freshly-killed small animals! I assumed that some predator had been storing its kills like a squirrel for winter, but I hadn’t had a burger or a steak or any sort of meat in weeks, so I kneeled down and immediately and eagerly began tearing in (I mean if a lion can get by on raw meat then I should be able to as well, right?).
But as soon as I made the first rending noise, something jumped out of a nearby bush, ready to attack. It was not the predator angry at its stock having been raided that I expected, however, but… A PERSON! She leaped out wielding a thick, heavy tree branch in both hands, ready to strike whatever meat-eater helped itself to the literal bait she had laid out!
There was a look on her face that said “Aha! I’ve got you now!” when she first em

THREE HOURS AFTER EXPERIMENT
I can’t believe how severely I blundered here! I made the sort of mathematical error that a physicist is not supposed to make, and on such a momentous and historical project at that! I’ve gone through the calculations, and it turns out that instead of sending me thirty seconds into the future, the machine has somehow sent me over 12,000 years into the past! What did I do to deserve this?
I just don’t get it. Tossing in the rock worked fine. Tossing in the plant worked fine. Tossing in the lizard worked fine. So what went differently with me? Was there a coincidental last- second power surge? Does the fabric of reality bend differently in the presence of sapience than non-spaience? Was it mere difference in mass? What went wrong?
I suppose it doesn’t matter anymore. I’m left out in the wild, and human civilization isn’t even invented yet let alone within reach. For all I know I might be the only h
